2026-08-17 Notes (Manning Kubernetes AWS project starts here)

Goals + Recap
#

  • Try and start the kubernetes project today.
  • Write a post about what it actually is in the afternoon
  • Whenever you are interrupted, by an intrusive thought or some work, leave a note here

  • Let’s begin!
  • Beginning with Mannings, Run Services Locally with Kind liveproject. Cannot figure out how long this will take. The site says the whole thing (this + 3 other projects) should take four weeks, at about 6-8 hours a week.
  • ||| 2026-08-17 08:48: Got interrupted with Reddit. I honestly don’t know how I landed up on there! Oh yea, I went to get my reading glasses. and then instead of going back to the lesson … BAM! Ok, back to work.
  • Realisation: It’s the old routine, where I had to wait and do things. I am still doing all of those things by rote.
  • Need to get work time in, as rote and muscle memory!
  • ||| 2026-08-17 08:56: Now I want to know the difference between PHPStorm and Webstorm
  • 2026-08-17 08:59: Did NOT realise first days will be so hard.
  • 2026-08-17 09:19: Need to go check some bank stuff
  • OK slight hiccough. I bought this and set it up so long ago, that the repo I set up is now deleted (at Manning) and now I have no clue how to go about setting up another. (Maybe I should use another github id)
  • The platform is dog slow. Maybe my internet is acting up
  • 2026-08-17 09:37: Ok, no matter what I do, nothing seems to work. Will just try all of this locally without checking my work with Manning. Gave up and send a message to manning. Let’s see what transpires. In the meanwhile, will try and do everything without Github integration and Manning milestones.
  • And just like that, as soon as I typed in my message, the integration worked! Sigh! Now to go write them another message.
  • 2026-08-17 09:50: Tea break

    • Docker (using docker debs. latest version. 2026-08-17 10:28)
    • Kind (done. no change needed. v29.7.2. 2026-08-17 10:26)
    • kubectl (done. v1.36.3 (fingers crossed it will still talk to my actual real cluster which is slightly old. think i should just update it.) 2026-08-17 10:40.)
    • Update k3s on production machine. use the same command as last time. update all the kubectl contexts, local and remote. did this because i wanted within the skew versions in both kind and in production (done. v1.36.3 fingers crossed 🤞 2026-08-17 11:01)
    • k9s (done. v0.51.0 2026-08-17 11:12)
    • kubeconform (done. v0.8.0 2026-08-17 11:15)
    • Kustomize (done. v5.8.1 2026-08-17 11:19)
    • Helm (done. running one version behind latest. but it’s a deb intall, it’ll get updated. v4.2.3 2026-08-17 11:22)
  • ||| 2026-08-17 10:18: Wondered and looked up how to move items up and down in markdwon mode in emacs
  • ||| 2026-08-17 10:23: Garbage disposal + doggie petting session
  • ||| 2026-08-17 11:16: realised why the impromptu shifts to random web browing. The minute, I have to wait on something, I want to fill in the time with mindless entertainment. And more likely than not, I lose track of what I was waiting on in the first place, and just keep mindlessly scrolling or downloading other more entertaining stuff or window shopping for books. Should learn to be more present. And wait.
  • 2026-08-17 11:24: Done for today. Will continue tomorrow.
